Awards
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers two awards to Graduate students:
The Ronald W. Walker Graduate Award for Excellence Scholarship
The Award: The "Award for Excellence in Scholarship" is intended to recognize a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Department for a record of outstanding scholarship.
Eligibility: The recipient must hold a Graduate Student in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and, at the time of the nomination, must have completed all but the last semester of his or her academic program leading to the M.A. in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. The nominee must also have completed the Comprehensive Examinations and the Final Oral Examination.
Procedure for the award: On March 1 of each academic year, the Graduate Studies Committee of the Department will announce a date for submission of nominations and will solicit letters from all persons who have direct knowledge of the potential nominee's academic performance. A nominator may be any member of the faculty or, in cases where the nominator's knowledge is well founded, a fellow graduate student. On receipt of all materials supporting the nomination, the Graduate Studies Committee will review all nominations and, as the case warrants, designate the awardee.
Support of the nomination: Nomination must include a one-page letter of nomination with the documentation necessary to support a case for the nominee's outstanding ability as a scholar. Such documentation may include testimonial letters, term papers and the M.A. paper, evaluations by the nominee's Graduate Adviser and members of the Graduate Committee, as well as any other evidence of excellence that the nominator may deem appropriate.
Conferral of the Award: The award will be made at the Department's Annual Awards Reception. The award shall include the public reading of the letter of nomination, a plaque, and monetary recognition, which may very in amount on an annual basis.

The Award: The “Award for Excellence in Teaching” is intended to recognize a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Department for a record of outstanding teaching.
Eligibility: The recipient must hold a Graduate Teaching Assistantship in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and, at the time of the nomination, must have completed at least two semesters of Supervised College Teaching (L 684 V) and have taught at least two semesters as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Department.
