Interdisciplinary MA

Votive Candles in Mexico

The Interdisciplinary MA combines the study of language, literature and culture including application of their critical methodologies, with the study of another field in the humanities such as Art, Education, History, Psychology, Anthropology, English (if not in Joint Program) etc.*

Interdisciplinary studies programs such as Ethnic Studies, Women's Studies, Latin American Studies, International Development Studies, Political Economy are also good choices. This option enables students to broaden the scope of their studies and to develop an interdisciplinary approach appropriate to the critical examination of the fields they have chosen. The Interdisciplinary MA should be undertaken only by students who already have a strong interest AND preparation in the collateral field.

* Other fields must be approved by graduate coordinator, thesis/portfolio advisor or chair.
Students pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Languages, Literatures and Cultures under the Interdisciplinary MA must earn a minimum of 34 credits. Course work must include a minimum of 21 credits in the language or literature of specialization and at least 9 credits earned in approved course work in a supporting field. Students electing this option write an interdisciplinary master's thesis or portfolio, and pass written and oral examinations. The Interdisciplinary MA may not be used to complete the undergraduate requirements for a teacher's certificate, but may be used to study certain graduate courses from the TESL program.
