The majority of our LLC majors are double majors. They recognize that a degree in Languages, Literatures and Cultures provides them with a world of opportunities.

Gain the ability to communicate in another tongue but also to analyze literary texts and films, to understand the workings of language, to appreciate diversity and to interact successfully across cultures.

As an undergraduate major or double major in LLC, you can focus on Spanish, French and German, and may choose from a variety of offerings.

As an undergraduate major or double major in LLC, you can focus on Spanish, French and German. You may choose from a variety of offerings, including classes in literature, languages for specific purposes, translation and interpretation, culture and cinema, linguistics and phonetics, as well as health and business language, among many others. We also offer a Teacher Licensure in these languages.

Why Spanish?

Spanish is one of the world’s most spoken languages—with about 500 million speakers. It is spoken in 44 countries, and the official language of 20 countries. In 2015, the US became the second-largest Spanish-speaking country and is projected to become the first by 2050.

The Spanish-speaking world boasts diverse cultures and literatures, from masterpieces of art, Nobel prize winning novelists and a rich popular culture. The mixing of different cultures, brought about by colonialism, makes the cultures and histories of Latin American countries and Spain, a fascinating and complex area of study: from the Roman and Arabic influences on the Iberian peninsula to the different indigenous, African, and European cultures in the Americas.

Course offerings include a wide range of language classes, classes in linguistics, translation, Latin American literatures and cultures, Peninsular literatures and cultures and Transatlantic studies. New courses are added every semester.

French Major at CSU

Why French?

French is spoken by 125 million people and is the 1st and 2nd language in 49 countries. It is also the 3^rd most second language learned in the world. It is truly a strong professional and cultural language to work or travel abroad or even within the U.S. with over 4,600 French companies conducting business in this country. Canada is also the 1^st US export partner and the 2^nd US import partner of the U.S.A.

French, along with English, is the official working language of The European Union, The United Nations, UNESCO, NATO, and the International Olympic Committee. France is very advanced in science and technology and also plays an international role in medicine. France is also the top worldwide tourist destination. Many graduate schools require knowledge of a second language, and French is considered very valuable in all fields. Additionally, the Peace Corps gives priority to French speakers.

German Major at CSU

Why German?

German is the most widely spoken language in Europe, the official language in Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland, and is commonly used as a second language in the emerging markets of Central and Eastern Europe. German language skills can help towards employment with companies having global business connections.

At last count, 91 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to recipients from the three major German-speaking countries, both in the sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Medicine) and in the humanities (Literature, Peace). As such, German is relevant to such diverse fields as History, Engineering, Music, Art, International Studies, Business, and Philosophy – to name only a few.

Both German and English are Indo-Germanic languages, affording students a ready grasp of the language, while simultaneously gaining a deeper understanding of English.

Our students take a variety of courses in language, literature, linguistics, culture, and practical applications such as Business German or translation. The degree prepares students for careers in government, education, business, and international work.

The German faculty specialize in a variety of sub-fields, including

Many of our students pursue a semester or a full academic year of study abroad in Berlin, Bamberg, Lüneburg, Salzburg, and Vienna. There are additional opportunities for summer study abroad.

Spanish for the Professions Major at CSU

Why Spanish for the Professions?

Spanish is widely used in professional contexts, both internationally and nationally. In some cases, this has to do with professions that rely on a Spanish-speaking immigrant workforce and in others with professional interactions and exchanges that occur across borders. In both cases, there is a profound need for field-specific language training that can bridge linguistic and cultural gaps and foster workplace cohesion and worker/client retention.

Why Us?

This major will provide students with language and cultural training in Spanish for field-specific contexts, such as Animal Care, Business, Health Care, and Translation & Interpreting. While receiving foundational competencies and knowledge in the Spanish language, literature and general cultural themes, students will complete course sequences in the professional context of their choice by selecting from among the options LLC offers.

The Spanish for the Professions will prepare students to

Successfully complete common and routine, as well as complex, workplace tasks which require communication in Spanish.
Demonstrate the ability to communicate and exchange ideas about common workplace related themes, both orally and in writing, using relevant field-specific vocabulary, grammatical accuracy and appropriate pronunciation.
Interact in a multi-cultural setting with an increased sensitivity to cultural and linguistic differences present in a specific work environment.
Demonstrate familiarity with relevant field-specific text types, genres and registers, as well as interpersonal and presentational formats of oral communication in particular work settings.

Teacher Licensure in Languages

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of children and young adults through language learning? LLC can get you where you want to go?

Students in French, German or Spanish can obtain the Teacher Licensure from the State of Colorado through the School of Education. This will qualify you to teach your language in the public-school system of Colorado.

Additionally, our LLC faculty is committed to making you more competitive on the job market by offering opportunities for service-learning or volunteering in the community.
