Biography

José Luis Suárez-García is a Professor of Spanish in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He has taught language courses at all levels, and regularly teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on the History of the Language, Golden Age Theatre, Contemporary Literature, and Hispanic Cultures. Professor Suárez-García has presented at national and international languages, literature, culture, and learning and knowledge conferences. He is currently Vice-President of The International Association of Spanish and New-Hispanic Golden Age Theatre (AITENSO). Professor Suárez-García was coauthor of two manuals for Intensive/High Beginning, and Intermediate Grammar Review courses (Nuevos Destinos), contributing writer for Pasajes (Cultura and Literatura, 4e) and is one of the main authors of Experience Spanish, first year Spanish program (2011, 2015, 2019) published by McGraw-Hill. He has also published several reviews, articles, and books on Spanish Golden Age theatre and cultures. Some of his publications have appeared in LAK (analytics), Criticón, Journal of Hispanic Philology, Editorial Castalia, including four books on Golden Age Theatre and Culture at the Editorial Universidad de Granada. He has been the recipient of major grants for teaching and learning program redesign from the Institute for Learning and Teaching (CSU) to revamp basic language instruction, and is actively involved in curriculum and program assessment, and adaptive learning technology at CSU. He was selected by CSU Semester at Sea as a Global Teaching Scholar for Fall 2019. Professor Suarez-Garcia is currently working on different areas of learning analytics to promote student inclusion and success: mindset analysis, metacognitive skills assessment (confidence analysis), and gender differences following negative feedback. 

 

Professor Suárez-García has worked with education abroad programs most of his professional career directing thirteen times a Summer Study Abroad programs in Granada, Spain, his native country; and two semester programs in Alcalá de Henares. He has travelled with students in Spain, Morocco, Argentina and Perú, and has evaluated study abroad programs in Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia. Professor Suarez-Garcia likes sports, in particular soccer and cycling, art, music and folklore, theatre, and learning about other cultures and traditions.

  • LSPA 492 Capstone Seminar. Textos de lengua, textos de cultura

    El presente curso sub-graduado estudiará la evolución de la lengua y cultura a través de una selección de textos de diferente contenido. En el curso se verán textos de la literatura y cultura medieval, renacentista, barroca, neoclásica y moderna o contemporánea. Durante el semestre también se analizarán textos de otras disciplinas (manuscritos iluminados, textos orales, textos legales o jurídicos, lenguaje de las profesiones o disciplinas, lenguaje epistolar, lenguaje periodístico, lenguaje publicitario, textos normativos, grafiti, etc.) con el objetivo de presentar la evolución histórica de la lengua a través de una serie de muestras que exponen y presentan diferentes momentos culturales y lingüísticos del español. En el curso se presentarán muestras no solo de la cultura peninsular, sino también de espacios geográficos americanos, así como de lugares donde la lengua española tiene una presencia cultural relevante.

  • LSPA437 Advanced Spanish Culture

    El presente curso estudiará a un nivel avanzado la cultura y la civilización españolas desde sus comienzos hasta el presente. En él se analizarán distintos aspectos de la geografía, historia, arte, literatura, música, costumbres, etc. de España. Se comenzará con nociones generales de la geografía de la Península Ibérica para dar paso inmediatamente al estudio de las formas culturales que más han influido a través de la historia de España en la configuración actual del país.
